What happens when humans co-opt the language of machines? 
B1NARY is a painting performance conducted as part of the CATS+ Residency at the Museum of Human Achievement (Austin, TX) in 2023. It is an experiment in introducing deliberate slowness and human error into the process of data transfer. I converted a transcript of a 15-minute conversation into 250+ pages of binary code and invited audience members to take turns reading the ones and zeros to me as I painted them. In the hour-long performance, I painted ten feet of canvas and only made it through one page of the transcript.
