Recombinant Memory Decay is an installation piece about the inadequacy of memory, history, and archives and learning to live with loss. It is an experiment in creating something new from the defunct. The installation is composed of hundreds of film slides collected from estate sales and thrift stores that have been scanned and turned into an experimental, datamoshed video. It is displayed on a CRT TV next to a similar video featuring the binary data of the original photos. The installation also includes an old slide projector and a reel of 100 curated slides and have been drawn on with a paint marker. Visitors are encouraged to manually advance the projector. It was first shown at Contra Common Gallery as part of Inventory-ing (2024).
